why SMALL GROUPs? We believe that this is the best place for sustained life change to occur. God changes people and reveals Himself in the context of people learning to do life together. The Purpose of a Small Group is to "do life together and to help each other walk with Christ." The commitment of small group participation is three fold:
First, partipation invites accountability. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 says, Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up. In the book of proverbs we read that one man sharpens another and he who walks with the wise...will be wise and friends were created for times of adversity. Therefore, we believe honest and authentic sharing of one's life is important to a person's spiritual growth or walk with Christ. Second, participation assumes belonging. Romans 12 says that "we are one body...members of one another." It continues by commanding that we "be devoted or give preference to one another." We believe that belonging to a community of people encourages a person to participate and use there gifts, thus enhancing their walk with Christ. Finally, participation engages in caring for one another. Over 50 times in the New Testament the church is commanded to do something for one another. We read that we are to love, admonish, comfort, and encourage one another among others. Small Group is the environment where we celebrate the successes and good times of life, as well as comfort one another during the tough and disappointing times. It is a place to be encouraged, equipped, and challenged to become a growing disciple of Jesus Christ. Practically speaking, there will never be a way for the staff or elders to personally minister to everyone who attends our church. That's why we place such a high premium on group life. It's how we minister effectively at Harvest Bible Chapel. For more information about small groups, please email Jeff Lothamer, Discipleship Pastor or call 616-786-2233.
